Illustration is a form of design which can take on many mediums. Illustration can be done traditionally, with paper, pens and paints- or it can be done digitally. There are many online drawing programs which many illustrators use today. Even photocopiers and FAX machines can be used to create interesting imagery.
Paddy Donnelly is a Belgium based designer originally from the north coast of Ireland. He works as a picture book author and illustrator. I will be analysing some of his works.
Donnelly’s style is rich in detail whilst remaining illustrative.
I particularly admire his use of texture in his works. The fabrics illustrated in this cover look tactile. The feathers and various other materials look light and soft. This is achieved by the illustrators attention to detail and calculated brush strokes.
The hand drawn look paired with the warm colours used in this cover creates an inviting and homely scene which suits the subject matter perfectly.
Paddy Donnelly’s hand drawn textures stand out in this cover too- utilising feathers in the background that look like scribbles straight from the authors pen.
The imperfect hand drawn typeface perfectly suits Donnelly’s style of illustration.
The yellow background compliments the blue of the dodo bird character and makes for an eye-catching cover- perfect for a book made for children.
Donnelly uses organic lines and shapes to make up this image with the only straight lines being used in the title- helping it to stand out even more.
