Group Critique

Overall, lots of the advice included simplifying designs. It is better to have multiple screens rather than cram lots of information into the one small screen.

For my screens, I will adjust my “route home” screen to have an alternate screen that gives directions, like the google maps apple watch feature. I will also look into What 3 Words, to see if I can determine a way to add more detail to my directions. I will also adjust the martini glass icon to correlate to the amount of alcohol consumed- over the course of the night it will fill up. I also got advised to create a home/ navigation screen which. Another point I will take into consideration is the option to hide your unit count from party members. I would replace this with a fun comment from the party members, or other important info such as location.

AV Project Brief

In this class we were given our brief for our autonomous vehicles project, which we will be working on for the next 5 weeks. Using a public miro board, we participated as a class to identify project goals, and barriers to said goals. This ‘sailboat’ exercise was a good start as working as a group to share ideas was very beneficial. For example, without this exercise, I wouldn’t have considered problems such as what is a passenger supposed to do if their autonomous vehicle gets a flat tire.

I am excited to move forward with this project.

Reflection

Getting started again this year I felt daunted by this first projects short duration. With the deadline only being a week after the brief was given, I needed to speed up my design process, breaking it up and managing my time effectively. In this project I felt like I needed to dive back into UX design after somewhat of a break over summer. Getting started again with a smartwatch based brief was a good challenge, as I had never designed for a smartwatch before. Smartwatch UI is substantially different for designing for a smartphone or the web. A wearable device is interacted with in a much more passive and minimal way, and the UI design must reflect this. I also found it hard to visualise how a smartwatch is used at first as I am not in possession of one, but using online resources I was able to overcome this.

When doing my initial sketches I had my doubts about my project, I thought I would end up disliking it. In the end I found this more challenging project fun, just like how I struggled with working minimally in my banking app project last year, working to a physical screen constraint helped me get creative. I felt like despite this projects short length, it helped me build confidence.
